Chichester Music Society, formerly known as the Funtington Music Group, was founded in 1992, and in 2004 it was invited by the University of Chichester’s Head of Music to hold its classical music concerts at the University. The Society continued to run an annual series of nine chamber concerts that included a popular annual Student Music Competition until its membership level regrettably became unviable during the 2020 Covid epidemic.
Since then, the Society has used its strong relationship with the University to sponsor concerts with the support of the University Music Department’s classical music staff. The usual format is a Masterclass workshop for the students led perhaps by well-known ensembles and musicians. This often leads to a special evening concert where the students are able to participate with the professional musicians. The Society also continues to offer bursaries as it has done since 2004 to talented music students that are recommended by the Music Department. The Society will be sponsoring three or four special workshop/concert events in 2026 with the University orchestras & professional musicians.
