Funtington Music Group gives a £4000 Violin to the University
The Funtington Music Group has continued its proud tradition of generous support for the University of Chichester which hosts its meeting. FMG has just presented a £4,000 violin as a gift, further strengthening the warm bonds of friendship between the two bodies.
In addition to giving students access to an exceptional programme of concerts by leading performers, members and friends of the FMG have generously donated over £57,000 during the past thirteen years. Funds help University music students through performance prizes, bursaries and a library of musical instruments.
Dr Ritchie, Teaching Fellow in Music, is seen with lucky student Bethan Wardrobe who will have the use of this magnificent gift for practice and performance, while studying at the University. Her own violin does not match the playing quality or sound of this one, which was built in the internationally renowned workshop of Silvian Rusu, Bucharest. It has been played in the world’s concert halls by the virtuoso Romanian violinist Horia Vacarescu. Horia is the brother of Bogdan Vacarescu who gave FMG a memorable performance last February and whose wife, Meg Hamilton is the joint organiser of the Amici Concerts in Chichester.
The FMG Christmas event last month was a multi-media presentation by prolific documentary film maker Mick Csáky who has been responsible for some of the finest programmes on the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 during the past 40 years. Mick became a member of FMG a year ago and ran this event to raise more money for musical instruments. The event raised £880, a good step towards the next instrument which FMG plan to purchase.
So far, the musical instrument library, started in memory of a founder member of FMG, has acquired a concert harp, a cor anglais, a two manual pedal organ and two violins. In addition, FMG has awarded 22 Bursaries of £1,000 each to high achieving students to help them go on to fourth year studies at conservatoires throughout the country in preparation for a career as a professional musician.
